Students who enter the school system without English proficiency must develop their English skills while being expected to perform well in their academic subjects. Many studies have found that emergent bilinguals tend to show increased social, behavioral, and emotional problems such as acting out for not understanding, developing feelings of shame for not keeping up, and developing low self-esteem. The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the lived experience of bilingual children who are placed in an English-only environment. The focus was to highlight struggles not addressed in previous research while observing how these children adapt and overcome these challenges. Using a semi-structured interview geared at targeting challenges and coping mechanisms these children employ in this environment allowed six themes to be identified: struggling to navigate both languages, discomfort in asking for help, benefits of having bilingual teachers, challenges similar to other students, pride in being bilingual, and perseverance. With students' difficulty navigating both languages, these challenges must be understood as a process they go through, not as a weakness. Bilingual students have two languages to pull information from. Allowing them to use their complete set of skills will help them create responses more easily while allowing them to feel valued. The access to teachers that speak both English and Spanish significantly impacts the students' comfort in asking questions and obtaining clarification when confused, which leads to students feeling like their learning experience was smoother. Emergent bilinguals utilized various sources to solve problems (Chromebook, YouTube, phones, online dictionaries, and thesaurus). Overall, it's important to note that while emergent bilinguals have unique challenges, they share everyday struggles like their monolingual counterparts, such as difficulties with math, anxiety about asking questions, test-taking, and reading out loud.
