The purpose of this action research project was to use self-study as a way to guide professional development. This study was undertaken by an elementary music teacher during the COVID-19 pandemic, when California public school teachers and students moved to remote learning. The study's subject needed to migrate established in-person music teaching practices to an entirely asynchronous, pre-recorded lesson format for 4,000 remote learning students in kindergarten through the fifth grade. Qualitative and quantitative data were gathered through an iterative process of planning instruction, producing video-based lessons, and reviewing lesson content from the perspective of a remote student. These data were utilized to assess the efficacy of asynchronous teaching practices and to plan and improve future lessons. The interpretation of the data show that self-study can be an effective method for leading one's own professional development in learning challenging new skills and practices.
