"How can the experiences and views of minoritized engineering students inform attempts to reform engineering education and turn engineering into a field that promotes more sociopolitical awareness?" Critics of global development argue that the concept and practice of development reflect the hegemony of the Global North over the rest of the world. As a result of this hegemony, the increased integration of various places into the world economy and the effects of vastly improved transportation and communication systems on multidirectional cultural flows have led to the minoritization of various groups of people and the chronic widening of inequalities. Minoritization refers to the process of being marginalized by means out of one's control. Therefore, the need for more inclusive and holistic growth must be emphasized by considering the needs and perspectives of the minoritized. Adding to this effort, this research contributes to addressing the above question by arguing that engineering work, which is an essential part of global development due to the fact that much of the current effort on development has been focusing on advancing infrastructure and technology, should not be apolitical or asocial. In support of this argument using microaggression as an example, this research investigates, through an intersectional lens, whether minoritized engineering students view microaggressions as a serious sociopolitical issue that needs to be addressed and how engineering education could address it. By understanding the perspectives of minoritized engineering students on microaggression and how to address some of the critiques of engineering education, we could begin to understand how to address some of the critiques of global development because, even though they seem unrelated, the critiques of engineering education and global development are two sides of the same coin.
