The effects of climate change on migration are apparent across an array of taxa. The Brazilian free-tailed bat (Tadarida brasiliensis) is a widely distributed bat of the Americas with long-distance migrants moving between Mexico and the South-Central United States. Bracken Cave in Texas is a major maternity colony in summer months that supports approximately 2.5 million bats. Historically, this population diffused once pups became volant and abandoned the roost entirely throughout winter. However, recent research has shown advancing pup flights and an increasing number of overwintering bats. A review of the phenology of T. brasiliensis reveals a clear disruption of reproductive events, but a lack of up-to-date research. By utilizing stable isotope analysis, our research uncovers early autumn migrants and a novel resident population inhabiting Bracken Cave. We also elucidate the use of dual-tissue types to infer migratory movements and guide future research needs across temperate Brazilian free-tailed bat roosts.
