This dissertation proposes a reimagination of the space between modern Western science and spiritual practices, and it is situated within the field of ecology, spirituality, and religion. A reciprocal relationship between practices of science and scientific research with practices of mysticism was a reality for Tenison Woods (1832-1889) and Teilhard de Chardin (1881-1955), the two primary subjects in this research. Their life and work melds, and often disrupts, rigid boundaries such as understandings of interior and exterior properties of matter. My qualitative approach encompasses a wide variety of methods and techniques. The primary methodologies are narrative inquiry, arts-based research, and autoethnography. The research technique is that of a bricoleur, using the materials available to reveal meaning and create new knowledge for myself. Metapraxis uses the metaphors of the mandorla and littoral zone. The broad interpretive framework of metaphysics and ontology is a blended selection of interdisciplinary approaches. Data was extracted from an array of primary sources such as maps and sketches, textbooks, physical locations, and artifacts and analyzed with ATLAS ti9 software. The biases and assumptions of the researcher were acknowledged and taken into account. The results support the claim that Julian Tenison Woods and Pierre Teilhard de Chardin experienced science and mysticism as one recursive movement or practice. A key learning of this research is a recognition that the intellect has significant spiritual value. In addition, the protagonists offer a legacy for the twenty-first century. A call to future generations may be found in their practices of science and mysticism as expressed in their repertoires of methods and skills, the heightening of their senses, their study of the great unpublished works of nature, and their fostering of a cosmic sense.
