Grassland birds throughout North America are experiencing rapid population declines, primarily resulting from land use conversion of open grasslands to agricultural fields and pastures. This study examines the impacts of various haymaking schedules and cattle grazing schemes on the abundance and nest site selection of five grassland bird species in Swoope, Virginia. Grassland bird abundance was greatest at the farm utilizing late-haying and rotational cattle grazing. Species-specific microhabitat affinities were observed: grasshopper sparrows and savannah sparrows were frequently seen in fields with sparse vegetation, while red-winged blackbirds were observed nesting in fields with tall, dense vegetation. Eastern meadowlarks and bobolinks were observed in fields of varying vegetation heights. Swoope provides unique, unfragmented grassland habitat for nesting grassland birds along the eastern United States, and the results of this study suggest that implementing less-intensive management practices may be beneficial for eastern grassland bird populations.
