The purpose of this qualitative descriptive study was to explore how American Indian therapists (AIT) describe their perception of sociocultural differences and similarities working with American Indian (AI) and non-American Indian clients in Maricopa County, Arizona. The theoretical framework was the multicultural counseling competency model. The research questions focused on how American Indian therapists describe their perception of sociocultural differences working with American Indian and non-American Indian clients, and how American Indian therapists describe their perception of sociocultural similarities working with American Indian and non-American Indian clients. Ten American Indian therapists completed a demographic survey and a semi-structured interview, and eight of them completed a post-interview questionnaire. Thematic analysis was utilized to analyze the data and seven themes developed: Definition of sociocultural, Definition of sociocultural differences, Awareness of sociocultural differences between AIT and AI client, Awareness of different way of life of non-AI client, Race relations between AIT and non-AI client, Similar way of life as American Indian clients, and Similar struggles as non-American Indian clients. The results indicated American Indian therapists have different tribal experiences and different upbringings than their American Indian clients, and they have challenges related to race relations while working with their non-American Indian clients. Also, American Indian therapists' cultural experiences, social interactions, and upbringings are similar between them and their American Indian clients, and they struggle with social problems just as their non-American Indian clients.
