The purpose of this study is to explore the literature in the context of theater being used as a teaching tool for leadership and to add to that ongoing discussion through a qualitative, phenomenological research study. This study included standardized interviews with 13 teachers and graduate students in the field of leadership and closely related fields. An informal semi-structured, inter-active, interview process with open-ended questions was used. All interviews were scheduled as online Zoom conference calls and were held to a 60-minute time-limit. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed utilizing the Zoom recording function, Colibri transcription software for Zoom, and NVivo qualitative data analysis software. Study data has been organized into eight themes and is presented in Chapter IV: Findings. There are six primary Research Questions in this study which are answered using study data in Chapter V: Discussion, Implications and Recommendations. Based on the findings of the study, theater-based activities such as storytelling, role-playing, simulation exercises, and improv theater are very effective and broadly used tools for teaching leadership. They are utilized at all levels of education including youth education, junior high school, high school, undergraduate and graduate programs. They are also used in medical school, law school, and in corporate leadership development and employee training workshops. The implications of the findings of this study are that theater is an excellent tool for the teaching and learning of leadership. These methods can be used with all ages, in large and small groups, and across many educational and professional disciplines and specializations.
