This thesis examines the impacts of a strategic and systems theory approach to addressing the complex societal challenges and opportunities Australia is currently facing - challenges and opportunities impacting not only Australia's unique ecological environment, but also its long term economic and social sustainability. Whereas the historical approach to many of these issues has been fragmented and piecemeal at both academic and political levels, a holistic systems approach provides the frameworks to leverage scenario planning, strategic planning, and community engagement models of social change.The thesis investigates the application of this modelling approach presented in four papers that: (i) examine the preferred future that Australians want; (ii) examine the application of a sustainable economic, ecological, and social prosperity lens with respect to the development options for northern Australia; (iii) examine the impact of a strategic planning-based community intervention on attitudes towards sustainable outcomes; (iv) examine the issues involved in the development of a strategic planning based framework for transition to Australia's sustainable future; and (v) review the academic, policy, and practical implications of these findings and this framework for transition, including opportunities for further research.The conclusions of this thesis suggest that sustainable prosperity may be achievable in Australia and would contribute significantly to the country's economic, ecological, and community well-being across key areas including energy, agriculture, land and water management, mining, education, and knowledge services. However, this future is not assured and the country's current 'business as usual' model of development is failing to leverage these economic, ecological, and social benefits.This thesis argues that nurturing a range of management competencies and leveraging a coordinated and integrated framework for transition to achieve sustainable prosperity can not only benefit Australia, but also be scaled and replicated internationally.
