Focussing on the art and design programs of the Container Corporation of America (CCA), this dissertation interrogates the conceptualization and employment of environmental design across the CCA's management strategies from the mid-1930s to 1970. The project begins by analyzing the dialogue between the CCA's design strategies and Laszlo Moholy-Nagy's philosophies at the New Bauhaus, and concludes with the corporation's conceptualization of Aspen, CO as a total environment. Using original archival research, each chapter advances a claim in relationship to corporate management, art, and environment, working to both specify these connections and explore their implications. The literature surrounding the CCA's art programs typically revolves around the cooptation of artists by the corporate capitalism of the CCA and American Cold War propaganda interests. While I do not deny that this history is interwoven with capitalism, by tracing the theme of environment I provide a more detailed understanding of what capitalism means in the context of these industrial-cultural partnerships, as well as the stakes involved in the usage of art and design for corporate strategy. Through focusing on the environmental, I analyze how these kinds of partnerships are embedded in geo-political issues related to resource extraction, colonialism, and understandings of the natural world. The continued influence of corporations on cultural practice underscores the relevance of unpacking histories of art and corporate relationships like the CCA's in greater detail. Not only have these partnerships contributed to forming institutions and frameworks that remain relevant and present in the 21st century, but they are also complicated stories of how artists, such as Moholy-Nagy and Herbert Bayer, have negotiated, advanced, and resisted some of these overarching corporate strategies.
