This research paper documents the stylistic evolution of composer Leos Janacek through an in depth study of his less-known violin compositions. It encompasses Janacek's early classical period, his reorientation toward the deep-seated roots of his country's Moravian folk music, and the resultant application of folk traits so apparent in the stylized strength of his later compositions. The study focuses specifically on Janacek's emerging style in writing for violin and is a practical demonstration of his diversity and an annotation of the composer's artistic growth. The violin in Leos Janacek's compositions represents a priceless contribution to the world of musical literature. To this day, musicologists have not yet analyzed his early works. Inherent in this study is the privilege of addressing several of the early compositional treasures from the collection entitled "Prazske Studie" (The Prague Studies) (twelve compositions which are as yet unpublished, and unknown to the world at large). The only existing documents of Leos Janacek's first steps in musical composition. The Prague Studies are also the only known example of Leos Janacek's use of conventional counterpuntal and polyphonic compositional style. Chapter One introduces the study encapsulating pertinent biographical information on Janacek, both as a man and a composer. Chapter Two presents the following pieces: "Zvuky ku Pamatce Forchgotta Tovacovskeho" (The Sounds in Memory of Forchgott Tovacovsky), Janacek's first composition for chamber orchestra; "Znelka" (Intrada) for four violins in A-major; and "Znelka" (Intrada) in G-minor. Chapter Three addresses "Romance" and "Dumka". In Chapter Four, the folk influence is approached from an historical point of view, addressing the attending influence of Janacek's strong patriotism and nationalism which are incorporated into his Pan Slavic philosophy and Russophilism. The ramifications are evident in his music through his choice of topics, genre, keys, modes, formal structure, modal resolutions and expression, with the dramatic momentum springing out of the folk philosophy. Chapter Five presents Janacek's Sonata for Violin and Piano and his posthumously reconstructed Concerto for Violin and Orchestra. All pieces introduced undergo a descriptive analysis, thereby assisting in the clarification of melodic, stylistic, harmonic and formal traits.
