Although Italians are regularly exposed to foreign languages, cultures and lifestyles, Italy is a dubbing country. A number of studies on audiovisual translation (AVT) have been carried out (Diaz Cintas, 2008), with varying emphasis on the impact that the practice of dubbing has had on the Italian language (Chiaro, 2010), and on how Italian viewers perceive culture-specific references coming from dubbed TV series (Ronzato, 2010). However, these two perspectives remain underexplored. The research considers dubbese (or filmic Italian) as a different register engendered by the long tradition of dubbing audiovisual and multimedia translated texts, where audiovisual translation includes 'media translation', 'multimodal translation', and 'screen translation'. In particular, the study analyses a sample of dialogues (dubbed and subtitled) from two American television (TV) series: The Big Bang Theory (TBBT) and Grey's Anatomy (GA). In order to conduct this study, a selection of clips was shown to an audience divided into three groups (A, B and C) according to their age, and inter-linguistic and intercultural transfer, as well as sociolinguistic aspects, were observed. This study therefore discusses new data regarding perceptions of the suitability of translated language and culture when watching subtitled and dubbed TV series against a background of the degree of acceptance of subtitling and dubbing. Both series are ideal examples of programmes which reproduce the spoken language in a more mimetic way as the text flows at a high rhythm, the episodes analysed are rich in overlaps as well as false starts or syntax re-scheduling, although they are always cohesive thanks to a pressing text progression (Motta, 2010). These programmes target different viewer sectors and therefore provide the opportunity to cross-reference data with respect to anagraphical and socioeconomic indicators.
