This thesis explores how museum educators can develop culturally relevant educational kits for elementary school students. My thesis topic originated from my internship experience at the Museum of Indian Arts & Culture - Laboratory of Anthropology in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 2011, where I worked closely with the Director of Education and Outreach. One of my responsibilities was to assist the Director with the redesign of an educational kit centered around Puebloan culture and history that was both relevant to Puebloan students and meets the Common Core educational standard in Social Studies. Using a multifaceted theoretical and methodological approach, my thesis research included the evaluation of the existing kit, creation of a kit development methodology that draws on museum exhibit development and curriculum development methods. I demonstrate that when approached through a lens informed by critical theory, constructivist theory, and object based learning theories; museum educational kits can be designed, and used to facilitate culturally relevant learning for commonly marginalized students while meeting Common Core educational standards. I conclude with recommendations for creating culturally relevant educational kits for use in fourth grade classrooms.
