This discourse analytic research examines speaking for others (Alcoff, 1991) as a communication practice within dialogue and deliberation in higher education contexts. Using grounded practical theory and action implicative discourse analysis, I explored how facilitators and participants used speaking for others in better and worse ways to navigate a variety of democratic talk dilemmas. To do so, this study drew on a robust corpus of data from two university programs focused on democratic talk: the Center for Public Deliberation at Colorado State University in Fort Collins and the University of Colorado Dialogues program in Boulder.Drawing on this analysis, I developed a practical theory for cultivating speaking for others that offers principles for recognizing better and worse forms of speaking for others, providing ways for facilitators and participants alike to better consider how to do speaking for others to accomplish democratic values. In particular, I offer two normative ideals that speaking for others should attend to: 1) expanding perspectives under consideration and 2) being contingent, partial, and open to critique or complication.
