Utilizing a two chapter format, featuring two manuscripts within one dissertation, I outline a new framework for engaging with visual materials from a critical discursive psychology perspective (chapter one) and subsequently use that framework to examine how gender is visually and verbally constructed in a romance film (chapter two).Chapter one is a conceptual paper that details the benefits of a visually informed critical discursive psychology approach, including the ability for critical discursive psychology researchers to study less commonly attended to forms of data (e.g., sculpture, architecture, dance) and better account for spaces where the visual and language are deeply intertwined (e.g., films, news broadcasts, YouTube videos, etc.). To guide future researchers, this chapter offers a) an integration of visuality into critical discursive psychology theory (including a conceptualization of visual discourse and visual interpretative repertoires), b) tools for close readings of visual materials, and c) details regarding the process of identifying and interpreting the function(s) of visual interpretative repertoires. Chapter two is an empirical paper that used the approach outlined in chapter one to examine how gender was produced in the 2015 period romance film, Far From the Madding Crowd. Given that mainstream films are widely circulated and thought to be actively involved in the cultural production of gender, I engaged in a detailed analysis of the discourse use throughout the film to identify how hegemonic masculinities and femininities were produced. The analysis consisted of a close examination of the visual and verbal discourse through transcription, labeling and memoing. Moreover, "hybrid" interpretative repertoires, featuring both visual and verbal elements, were identified by observing repeated discursive patterning and their social functions while further connecting this patterning to broader societal ideas and imagery.
