This dissertation considers what the psychological and emotional effects of the mother-daughter relationship are on feminine notions of selfhood and how these effects are embodied and problematized in the genre of life-writing. As such, this study is not only concerned with the mother-daughter relationship, but specifically examines how telling the story of this relationship takes shape in a narrative where the author also represents herself. Presented in individual case studies, this dissertation analyzes the autobiographical and (auto)fictional texts of four authors: two "mothers" of French feminism, George Sand and Simone de Beauvoir, and two representatives of global feminisms in the Francophone world, Marguerite Duras and Marie-Celie Agnant. Adding to previous studies that examine the mother-daughter relationship in works by these authors, this study focuses on the impact of this foundational relationship on the feminine self that the author portrays in her narrative. Each chapter considers how the mother-daughter narrative is shaped, through the lens of feminist theories, by the specific sociohistorical, economic, and racial context, and, through the lens of psychoanalytic theories, by some deeper, unconscious conception of the maternal. Ultimately, this work is concerned with locating the liberating potential in feminine connection through an in-depth analysis of the mother-daughter relationship and its effect on women's identity. Throughout each chapter, we explore how the passing on of one's mother-daughter story, be it through oral storytelling, letters, autobiography, or autofiction, creates space for social and psychological repairs to the past traumas that pushed the author to tell her story in the first place.
