This study aims to investigate how English relative clauses (RCs) are translated into Chinese. In the Chinese context, the translation of English RCs has been a topic of interest to the research community for over four decades. In those studies, the difficulties caused by the contrast in word order between head and clause attachment in English and Chinese have been highlighted and consequently various techniques for translating RCs have been proposed. The majority of these studies have been practical in orientation. Except for the search for effective translation techniques, there has been little interest in other aspects of English RCs. In previous studies, insufficient attention was paid to methodological issues, because most of these studies were based on speculation or the researchers' own experience. Furthermore, the framework used was mainly contrastive comparison between English and Chinese only. In order to overcome these limitations, I carried out this study using a linguistic typology approach. RCs are defined semantically in typological studies. Downing (1978) asserts that all languages make use of restrictive RCs to modify NP heads. To guide this study, a contrastive comparison has been conducted. I hypothesize that it is likely that English RCs can be translated into Chinese with Chinese RC equivalents. To avoid the methodological defects of previous studies, I decided to build an English Chinese parallel corpus. English RCs in the source texts as well as translation strategies in the Chinese translated texts were human identified and tagged manually for follow up analysis. This study used corpus data to establish that although English RCs can be translated into Chinese RCs, not all English RCs are necessarily translated into Chinese RCs. Data also revealed that among the three available translation strategies, meaning based and form based are the two favored strategies, while deletion is a marginal strategy for translating English RCs into Chinese. Analyzing quantitative data revealed that RCs in texts of a fictional type are mainly translated using a meaning based strategy while RCs in texts of a non fictional type tend to be translated according to a form based strategy. In addition, corpus data show that RC type may have an influence on the choice of strategy.
