The subject of the male nude did not transition into early modern painting, specifically Impressionism, with the same veracity as the female nude. While the female nude, as represented by Impressionist painters, has been thoroughly discussed by art historians and scholars, there has been a lack of conversation considering this unequaled preference for the nude body, specifically from leading feminist theorists. By seeking the intersections between feminist and postcolonial theories, this research considers the modernization of the female nude, from a Venus to a prostitute, while correlating the lack of modernization of the male nude to the French colonization of Africa. It has been a political and social agenda which created a hierarchy of acceptable nudity, leaving the budding bourgeoisie class above anything that could be compared to the more "primitive" peoples of Africa.
