This dissertation investigates semantic composition of sentences with a plural such as the boy typed the two recipes. While it is standardly assumed that plural nouns like the two recipes denote pluralities like {recipe1,recipe2}, there is no consensus about the meanings of expressions including a plural like typed the two recipes. A traditional approach assumes such expressions as typed the two recipes denote singularities like {type({recipe1,recipe2})} (e.g., Link 1983, Krifka 1989, Beck and Sauerland 2000). On the other hand, a more recent approach assumes such expressions denote pluralities like {TYPE(recipe1),TYPE(recipe2)} (e.g., Gawron and Kehler 2004, Kubota and Levine 2016, Schmitt 2020). Note that under the recent approach, the part structures of plural nouns 'project' to the meanings of the expressions including the plurals; typed the two recipes denotes a doubleton set just like the two recipes does. As a result, recipe1 and recipe2 in {type(recipe1),type(recipe2)} in some sense continue to be accessible in composition under the recent approach. In this dissertation, I observe that plural projection, i.e., projection of the part structures of plurals, enables the recent approach to capture some semantic 'non-local relations' easily unlike the traditional approach without the assumption about plural projection, but plural projection also causes overgeneration. Thus, one primary claim of this dissertation is that the need for plural projection is unclear. On the other hand, I also observe that whereas grammar does not seem to allow for the part structures of non-conjunctive plurals to project, it should allow for the part structures of conjunctions to project, and thus conjunctive projection should be possible. Therefore, this dissertation demonstrates that both the traditional and recent approach are partially correct (the traditional approach is correct for the unavailability of plural projection, and the recent approach is correct for the availability of conjunctive projection). After Chapter 1 provides a brief overview of this dissertation, Chapter 2 first demonstrates that the need for plural projection is unclear. The arguments for this claim come from novel observations about locality of the so-called cumulativity, i.e., a phenomenon in which sentences with multiple plurals have very weak truth conditions. It will be shown that whereas plural projection serves to capture locality of some cumulativity that is argued to be difficult to capture without plural projection, plural projection is not sufficient to capture locality of other cumulativity. Moreover, it will be shown that plural projection causes overgeneration. On the other hand, Chapter 2 develops an analysis of cumulativity that can capture locality of all the relevant types of cumulativity without plural projection. Thus, Chapter 2 argues that the need for plural projection is unclear.Whereas Chapter 2 casts doubt on the need for plural projection, Chapter 3 demonstrates that conjunctive projection should be possible. The arguments for this claim come from novel observations about locality of relations between an order-sensitive operator like 'in turn' and its target plural. For instance, I will present some minimal pairs consisting of sentences with a conjunction and a non-conjunctive plural, and show that only the former allows a non-local relation between an order-sensitive operator like 'in turn' and its target plural. Based on such observations, Chapter 3 argues that conjunctive projection should be possible while the need for plural projection is unclear. Chapter 3 also illustrates how conjunctive projection can be implemented in an analysis of plurals, and presents when conjunctive projection seems prevented. The primary conclusion of this dissertation that conjunctive projection should be available while plural projection is not suggests that we must diversify grammar of conjunctions and non-conjunctive plurals.

Link 1983, Krifka 1989, Beck and Sauerland 2000). En revanche, une approche plus r´ecente sugg`ere que de telles expressions d´enotent des pluralit´es comme {tapa(recette1),tapa(recette2)} (par ex. Gawron and Kehler 2004, Kubota and Levine 2016, Schmitt 2020).
