Rural healthcare has been the subject of much debate in recent years. Historically rural communities struggled with obtaining high-quality healthcare at low costs due to multiple factors, such as isolation from hospitals, lack of specialized care, low economic opportunities which resulted in fewer individuals being covered by insurance, and social and cultural misconceptions regarding rural communities. Behavioral healthcare in particular has been difficult to obtain for members of rural communities due to external and internal factors such as stigma associated with mental health. Change drivers, including federal legislation, advances in telehealth delivery, and an increased national interest in behavioral health have all brought rural communities into the attention of state and federal healthcare reformers. This paper will focus on behavioral health in rural communities, specifically that of rural adolescents. A model of implementing lasting and effective behavioral healthcare delivery will be presented, as well as methods for measuring the model's effectiveness. Barriers to change and implications to future research will also be presented in this paper. With the many challenges individuals are facing today, particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic, it is of national interest that rural adolescent behavioral health and wellbeing be accessible to rural communities.
