The Old Testament stories illustrated in Islamic miniature paintings came largely from the Bible, but the Islamic interpretation often developed new motifs. These new motifs first appeared in the Koran and later were elaborated in the Islamic poetry and literature. Therefore the depiction of Old Testament images in Islamic miniature paintings is characterized by the combination of traditional Christian artistic elements and original, uniquely Islamic elements. The discussion of iconographic and stylistic differences and similarities in representation of Old Testament images in both arts is based on several important aspects. It is crucial to understand the formation of the art of painting in Islamic culture. The process of commission, sources of patronage, and the purpose of Islamic religious painting when compared to Christian religious paintings help us identify the nature of religious paintings in both cultures. Christian art was inseparably linked to a Church which defined the didactic purpose of Biblical images, and was identified as the main patron and commissioner of such works. Islamic clergymen, by contrast, strongly disapproved any representational art, including the Old Testament characters and scenes. Therefore the Old Testament images in Islamic paintings were created in the royal workshops for the delight and entertainment of Arabic, Persian, and Turkish patrons.
