The purpose of this dissertation is an attempt at assessing the structure of 1 John through the method of discourse analysis. To that end, chapter one introduces the study by acquainting the reader with the purpose to be achieved, the organization to be followed, and an examination of previous studies on the structure of 1 John. The problems that exist in the study of the structure of 1 John are discussed and different approaches that have been applied to the structure of 1 John are also evaluated. Chapter two presents the methodology used in this dissertation. The study focuses on the methodologies that isolate individual units and detect the interrelationship between units in 1 John. Chapter three focuses on the isolation of individual units via identification of unit boundaries. Two means are used: cohesion shift and inclusio. Two kinds of "shifts" are discussed: high-level and medial-level. The aim of the cohesion shift analysis is to demonstrate that identifiable, corresponding shifts in various dynamics which make a unit of text cohesive may be tracked throughout 1 John. Through the use of inclusio an author marks the beginning and ending sections of a block of text by utilizing distant lexical parallels. Chapter four investigates lexical cohesion between one or more discourse units in 1 John. Lexical items that play key roles in two or more units are examined and transitional techniques that facilitate movement from unit to unit and section to section are also identified. These transitional techniques will be grouped under two categories: constituent transitions and intermediary transitions. Chapter five examined the logic behind the arrangement of those clarified units by scrutinizing the means by which the author advances his discourse. Chapter six concludes the dissertation by defending discourse analysis as a valuable exegetical tool. Discourse analysis is an objective tool which scholars can use to refocus attention on the structure as well as the content of the biblical text.
