This dissertation is devoted to studying the role of military capability in deterrence. In particular, each of its three papers focuses on a different aspect of how military preparations made 'in peace' shape the dynamics of deterrence and the ability to prevent a crisis from occurring. Deterrence has, of course, been studied extensively. Yet I argue, in the introduction, that several aspects of deterrence - especially the role of pre-crisis military preparations - have been understudied. Throughout this dissertation I argue for how and why military capability and preparations for war enable deterrence and the 'keeping of the peace.' While resolve has received most of the attention in studies of deterrence, military capability and how this is developed has received less attention in the literature. But these issues - including distinctions between types of military forces, forms of security force assistance and how military force aggregates in alliances - have major implications for questions of peacetime force posture and security assistance through military alliances. I assemble empirical evidence and provide formal theoretical logic that together highlight the role of military capability and preparations in deterrence. In doing so, I draw attention and contribute to aspects of deterrence studies that have been overlooked by scholars and are of immediate relevance to policy-makers confronting contemporary problems of interstate conflict, tensions and competition.
