Robert Schumann (1810-1856) suffered from recurring mental and physical symptoms, and died insane in a mental asylum. The question of whether a connection exists between madness and genius has long aroused controversy, since many artists and musicians of genius were reportedly mentally ill. Schumann's tragic life is a case in point and numerous experts have tried to explain how this composer's illness influenced his creativity, from both musicology and medical viewpoints. Did his illness nourish or mar his creativity? As to the diagnoses of Schumann's illness, among various explanations, the most likely assertion is that Schumann suffered from manic-depression, and that near the end of his life he developed an organic brain disease and general paralysis caused by syphilis. This view was asserted by Gruhle in 1906, and later supported by Slater and Meyer. Starting with an overview of the composer's life and personality, this paper will discuss how his illness manifested itself in his music. Characteristics of Schumann's music and the diagnoses of several doctors and psychiatrists will be discussed. An analysis of Schumann's life shows that his productivity slowed and that his motivation became inhibited during periods when his health and mental state were in poor condition. Although the decline of the quality of compositions created during the depressive stage is not significant, Schumann's mental state is mirrored in them. The last psychosis (a sickness which required hospitalization and eventually led to death) undeniably impaired Schumann's musical powers, and the decline of his creativity in later years is readily apparent.
