The number of jobs in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers has increased in recent years (U.S. Department of Education, 2016) and is projected to grow at a higher rate than non-STEM jobs between now and 2029 (Zilberman & Ice, 2021). However, African Americans are underrepresented in those jobs (NCES, 2020; Fry, Kennedy, & Funk, 2021). The purpose of this study was to assess parental behaviors that do the following (1) influence STEM career development and (2) influence the choice of a STEM undergraduate major for African Americans. This researcher used a self-report survey to examine the relationships among pre-college STEM socialization, parental career expectations, parental support, parental involvement, STEM major choice, and STEM major persistence. Additionally, parental support and parental involvement were examined to determine whether they had a moderating effect on pre-college STEM socialization's ability to predict STEM major choice and persistence. Three hundred and eighty-five African American undergraduate juniors and seniors participated in this study via electronic online survey. This study found that parental behaviors were found to be significant predictors of major choice and major persistence. Parental support was found to be a significant predictor of major persistence. Pre-college STEM socialization and parental career expectation were found to be significant predictors of major choice. However, parental support and parental involvement were not found to have moderating effects. A post hoc analysis found that STEM students reported experiencing more pre-college STEM socialization, parental career expectations, and major persistence than non-STEM.
