The purpose of this qualitative study was to identify perceived barriers to athletic director leadership specifically for Institutional First-Gen, Black male, athletic directors (ADs) at the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) level. Data sources for this phenomenological investigation depicted the essence of the experience via five one-on-one interviews with ADs who were the first Black males to secure AD leadership in their institution's history. Interviews with each participant revealed seven themes with four serving as distinct barriers. The first was exposure/collective mentorship leading to AD leadership for Black males. Second was Black male ADs viewing their race as an advantage in their current position. Next were the four barriers: Black male administrators being pigeonholed into "student facing" positions, implicit bias in hiring practices, Black male administrators being judged collectively, and historical doubt in Black male leadership. The last theme was "Checking the Box." In conclusion, participants suggested to break barriers at the FBS level, Black male administrators must receive exposure to external areas, collective mentorship, and view their race as an advantage as they pursue AD leadership.
