Teaching and learning require an environment of emotional intelligence and social and emotional learning. The problem addressed in this qualitative case study was the lack of emotional intelligence training for online teachers. Those teachers work without face-to-face communication, which can hinder the understanding of emotions, the use of emotions in reasoning, and the management of emotions in self and others. The purpose of this study was to examine online teachers' strategies to convey and develop emotional intelligence and social and emotional learning in their online teaching using constructivism as the theoretical framework. Participants included eight purposively selected online teachers at New Vision University to discover strategies online teachers employ to convey and develop emotional intelligence skills in their online teaching. Data collection was through an interview and a questionnaire based on semi-structured questions. Inductive analyses and coding methods resulted in seven themes. All participants highly valued emotional intelligence skills, but only one worked with a curricular program to convey and develop those skills. Online teachers hold emotional intelligence skills in high regard but use their efforts to convey and develop those skills. Online teachers should receive emotional intelligence skills training as part of their professional development for future practice. Schools should stress the importance of effective communication with students, and online program directors should focus on overcoming barriers in helping online teachers to receive specific training in emotional intelligence skills. A future school-wide study with more participants is recommended.

La ensenanza y el aprendizaje requieren un ambiente de inteligencia emocional. El problema abordado en este estudio de caso cualitativo fue la falta de formacion de inteligencia emotional para los profesores online. Esos maestros trabajan sin comunicacion cara a cara, lo que puede dificultar la comprension de las emociones, el uso de las emociones en el razonamiento y la gestion de las emociones en uno mismo y en los demas. El proposito de este estudio fue examinar las estrategias de los profesores online para transmitir y desarrollar la inteligencia emocional en su ensenanza online, utilizando el constructivismo como marco teorico. La recoleccion de datos fue a traves de una entrevista y un cuestionario basados en preguntas semiestructuradas. Los analisis inductivos y los metodos de codificacion dieron como resultado siete temas. Todos los participantes valoraron mucho las habilidades de inteligencia emocional, pero solo uno trabajo con un programa curricular para transmitir y desarrollar esas habilidades. Los maestros online tienen en alta estima las habilidades de inteligencia emocional, pero usan sus esfuerzos para transmitir y desarrollar esas habilidades. Los maestros online deben recibir capacitacion en habilidades de inteligencia emocional como parte de su desarrollo profesional para la practica futura. Las escuelas deben enfatizar la importancia de una comunicacion efectiva con los estudiantes, y los directores de programas online deben centrarse en superar las barreras para ayudar a los maestros online a recibir capacitacion especifica en habilidades de inteligencia emocional. Se recomienda un estudio futuro en toda la escuela con mas participantes.
