The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC, 2020) outlines that Jamaica has the 5th highest intentional homicide rate in the world. Densely populated areas such as Kingston and Montego Bay experience high levels of crime and violence. The prevalence of crime and violence has become so common place that it is represented in cultural elements such as music where violent themes aimed at various minority groups have been incorporated into Jamaican popular music, including dancehall. Common themes in dancehall focus on the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) community. Consequently, in recent years, the surge in mob attacks against the LGBT have been reported, prompting human-rights groups to call Jamaica "the most homophobic place on earth" (Padgett, 2006). It is through the use of music that many homophobic sentiments have been transmitted to the population and the global community. In this thesis, an analysis of the lyrics of ten Dancehall songs recorded between 2001-2010 and the violent homophobic message they convey is undertaken. While violence is aimed at both sexes, the primary focus is on male-on-male violence.
