Research indicates that LGBTQ individuals are more inclined to seek services from therapists who are LGBTQ competent. This investigative study explored the potential barriers that social work professionals acknowledge as hindering LGBTQ individuals from accessing mental health treatment and services. Using a purposeful sample, five social work practitioners participated in a semi-structured interview to determine the factors that discourage or prevent LGBTQ individuals from accessing mental health treatment. The significance of competency, trust, and education pertaining to the therapeutic relationship and treatment trajectory of LGBTQ individuals was examined. Each narrative was later transcribed, coded, and analyzed for themes. Themes that emerged included Competency, Self-Awareness, Identity Humility and Accountability. These themes represent the pillars for sound clinical practices, especially when working with the LGBTQ community. Implications for bettering our clinical practices with LGBTQ clients is discussed including how best to prepare clinicians to work with LGBTQ individuals.
