Climate change and global warming are causing environmental degradation that is destabilizing natural and social systems from local to global levels. Natural resources, food production, and agricultural productivity are some of the systems that are being affected by the extreme temperatures and increasing climate variability, which has led to significant impacts to the complex network that is the food industry. The impacts on the production, distribution, and consumption of food are leading to issues of food insecurity and nutritional challenges all over the world. Both food insecurity and climate change are leading to detrimental consequences, such as the environmental displacement of millions of people. This paper aims to explore the relationship that exists between climate change and food production, and how new technologies, such as gene editing, can help the issue of food insecurity by supplementing conventional food production without putting more stress on the environment.
