Exposure to trauma is linked to a number of physical and psychological consequences which impede functioning and development. Trauma exposure is linked to physical symptoms throughout the body, including in the gastrointestinal, cardiovascular, immunological, reproductive, musculoskeletal and neuro-endocrine systems (D'Andrea, Sharma, Zelechoski, & Spinazzola, 2011). Psychological consequences, meanwhile, include internalizing symptoms such as depressed mood, anxiety, substance abuse disorder, and post-traumatic stress disorder (Freeman, Mokros, & Poznanski, 1993; Haden & Scarpa, 2008; Mohammad, Shapiro, Wainwright, & Carter, 2015) and externalizing symptoms such as aggression and anti-social behaviors (Brook et al., 2013; Gabarino, 2001; Schwartz & Proctor, 2000; Yaroslavsky et al., 2013). Current research points to the benefits of social support as a moderator in the relationship between internalizing symptoms and community violence exposure for adolescents (Donnelly & Holzer, 2018; Haden & Scarpa, 2008; Hammack et al., 2004; Shahar & Henrich, 2016), but little is known about its beneficial role in the lives of emerging adults. Arnett and colleagues (2004) outline the shifts in demographic trends that have led to an understanding of emerging adulthood as a new life stage which occurs between the ages of 18 and 29. Studies of emerging adults have demonstrated a positive association between parental support and psychological well-being (Holahan et al., 1994). Crockett and colleagues (2007) found that, when both parental and peer supports were considered in the same model, only parental support buffered the association between acculturative stress and depressive symptoms.
