Dating violence is a public health concern that impacts adolescents often results in both poor physical and mental health outcomes. Increased use of technology among youth also contributes to perpetration of violence. Much of the research that explores this public health concern has addressed dating violence in the context of heterosexual and cisgender people. However, data shows that LGBTQ + youth experience higher rates of violence. LGBTQ + youth have experiences of cultural oppression and marginalization that further impact physical and psychological health. The visibility of the transgender and gender nonconforming (TGNC) community is continuously increasing, and a high prevalence of dating violence in society already exists. As the TGNC population becomes more visible, it is important to look at dating violence in this population. TGNC youth may be at particular risk for unique forms of dating violence and may also be less likely to report experiences of victimization due to general lack of acceptance of gender minorities, historical and personal experiences of victimization and marginalization, as well as lack of resources that meet the specific needs of the population. This dissertation discusses current prevention programs and trauma-informed practices while considering factors to address minority stress. Finally, this dissertation also proposes a model for working with TGNC youth who have experienced dating violence.
