AbstractIn 2018, 6,807 youth aged ten to twenty-four died by suicide in the United States. Suicide prevention programs vary in their content, distribution, and target audience. Many programs encourage adults to recognize the warning signs and red flags. However, the number of children who die by suicide each year steadily rises despite the various measures implemented to decrease it. It may, therefore, be assumed that current prevention efforts fail at containing a growing problem. Given that children spend most of their day in a school setting, suicide prevention programs may best be directed at training school personnel. This program development dissertation project delivered by webinar attempted to utilize comprehensive, evidence-based literature to improve how school personnel recognize and respond to suicidal youth. Research on precipitating circumstances in the suicide deaths of approximately 3,000 children show factors not previously considered in prevention efforts. This information, along with pre-existing literature will be used to gain a better understanding of what situations or behaviors precede suicide, and in turn, shed light on a child at increased risk of dying by suicide. Practical strategies for increasing school connectedness to thereby reduce suicidality will also be explored. The overarching purpose of this program is to increase the comfort of school personnel in responding to suicidal youth while ultimately decreasing the number of children who choose to end their lives by suicide.
