Previous research has not thoroughly examined factors influencing the course of treatment in suicidal adolescents. The current study utilized archival data to explore variations in treatment responses in adolescents exhibiting suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs). This study examined the influence of gender, family conflict, history of abuse, history of psychiatric hospitalization, age at intake, internalizing and externalizing scores, and number of psychiatric diagnoses on treatment responses in suicidal and non-suicidal adolescents receiving treatment at a partial hospitalization program (PHP) in a community mental health setting. The analyses found that being younger at intake and having a higher number of past psychiatric hospitalizations predicted poorer treatment response (i.e. increased the duration of treatment) and having a higher internalizing score at intake predicted better treatment response (i.e. decreased the duration of treatment). Unexpectedly, suicidal thoughts and behaviors did not significantly predict poorer treatment responses in the sample overall. Furthermore, the variables of interest did not significantly predict poorer treatment responses in the group of adolescents who endorsed suicidality. While this study did not confirm its hypotheses, it added valuable information through examination of treatment responses in an understudied population and partial replication of past research. The author discusses how the results inform both future research and clinical work in youth with STBs.
