Nursing faculty are unique, in the realm of higher education, due to being nurses first. Nurses transfer empathetic concern to students when they become nursing faculty. Educating nursing students comes with the real-life experience of working alongside them with the current issues they are facing. This work can leave nursing faculty feeling emotionally and physically drained, which may then lead to compassion fatigue. This experience, coupled with challenges brought on by a global pandemic, leads to increased experiences with compassion fatigue. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of undergraduate nursing faculty with compassion fatigue. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with a sample of five undergraduate nursing faculty in the Midwest region. Four themes emerged from the data: 1) constant worry, 2) longing, 3) positive coping, and 4) withdrawal/avoidance. One sub-theme, stress, was identified under constant worry. This study's findings add to the literature gap on compassion fatigue in faculty who teach in higher education, specifically those who teach in undergraduate nursing education.
