Over the past decade, the rise of mental health needs amongst the college population has been exponential. Research suggests that rates of mental health diagnosis, suicidal ideation and attempts amongst the college student population have nearly doubled over the past ten years. Suicidal ideation and attempts amongst the college population have steadily risen, with notable differences in prevalence rates and risk factors between male and female students. Furthermore, research on suicide suggests the existence of difference risk factors for suicidal ideation only (such as hopelessness) and suicide attempts (including behaviors consist with fearlessness of death). As such, this study aimed to explore the differences in risk factors for suicidal ideation and attempts in the college population, with particular focus on differences between male and female students. Results indicate some significant results, including the finding that female college students are more likely to experience suicidal ideation and attempts than male students. Furthermore, hopelessness and depression are more strongly related to students who reported a history of attempts in the previous 12 months. Finally, a history of sexual and physical assault was significantly related to male and female student attempters, however with a slightly stronger relationship with female student attempters.
