As a source of immigrants to the United States, the Philippines has been an outlier in its cultural experiences since the 1500s, compared to the rest of Asia. The Philippines is unique among Asian countries because it is the only one that was directly colonized by the United States (David & Okazaki, 2006). Because of colonization by both Spain and the United States, and the context of the transfer between those two countries, Filipinos experience an enhanced level of colonial mentality (CM), a form of oppression. Contrary to widespread belief, Filipinos are disadvantaged as a people in their own country due to the United States' presence in their culture. CM causes cultural and ethnic denigration of Filipinos who live in the Philippines and has a direct effect on Filipino mental health after immigration. CM has become an invisible psychological challenge to Filipinos. The purpose of the study was to review a documentary that highlights people who have experienced colonial mentality in their lives, communicating how CM-F has impacted their lives and what specific problems CM-F caused. The documentary also focused on how CM-F has created within Filipino people an almost inherent inferiority complex in comparison to Americans. The documentary was presented to a review committee comprised of professionals in the psychological field (N = 8); to determine if they believed the documentary could be helpful to Filipino immigrants, or possibly to anybody experiencing CM. The reviewers rated items including the degree to which they (1) agree the documentary is easy to understand, (2) can describe what CM-F is as a result of watching it, and (3) agree that could this be effective in facilitating healthy conversations around mental health.
