Urban design, development, planning, and policies have been essential aspects of a continuously developing country. As one of the developing countries, Indonesia has been experiencing tremendous growth, especially with the country's plan to relocate its nation's capital triggered this research. However, the lack of comparative studies amongst existing cities in developing countries such as Indonesia is still a significant issue in urban design and development. There has not been a consistent and straightforward method for data collection and study of important urban structures, such as the street network of cities in the Indonesian archipelago. As a vast country with numerous diversity and many variations of culture, ethnicity, language, geographical location, and architectural styles, the hypothesis is that there must also be diversity in Indonesia's urban configurations.The scale of this research cannot be done using traditional data collection and archival works due to the limitation in data samples, geographical sources, technical knowledge, and availability of time. Limited knowledge, technique, and data sources are still issues for robust and comprehensive urban spatial studies in developing countries.This dissertation uses an exploratory approach that utilizes the advances and availability of Big Data and web 2.0 from user-generated content. This content has created a crowd-sourced participatory culture that is constantly monitored, corrected, and revised for accuracy and can significantly benefit urban studies. The database acquired for this research is two-fold. First, using demographic datasets from Indonesia's census tract, which then visualizes the population density of Indonesian cities. The second uses maps from Volunteered Geographic Information (VGI) such as OpenStreetMap. The maps are processed using OSMnx, a software built on top of Python language that utilizes OpenStreetMap that provides a rich network analytical visualization application. The street centerline maps, area maps, and raster map that stores geospatial and topological information are analyzed using Geographic Information Science (GIS) multi-platform such as ArcGIS, Axwoman, and qGIS applications. In addition, methods from space syntax, street network analysis, and statistical analysis are used to measure and analyze the geometrical and topological value of the case studies.Indonesia's capital cities from 34 Indonesian provinces are used for case studies to identify a "model geometry" for Indonesian cities that might serve as a reference for the future growth of Indonesian cities. The case studies are grouped into six regions to map Indonesia's urban spatial patterns: Sumatera, Java-Bali, Nusa Tenggara, Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Maluku-Papua. This study explores demographic-spatial patterns, street grids, and topologic distribution patterns, including developing the framework for describing the patterns of urbanization in Indonesian cities.The study's findings provided significant insights into the characteristics of Indonesian cities. Characteristics such as population concentration, urban forms, movement, integration, syntactic pattern, and correlation between the findings were beneficial to describing the similarities and differences among Indonesian cities and understanding the regional variations in the Indonesian archipelago. This study will not only contribute to the field of urban design in Indonesia by providing robust methods for describing complex urban geometries and street networks. At the same time, the methods used in this study are useful for national and regional development policy that could influence building regulations, land use, building efficacy, and accessibility. This study is also essential for the emerging future Indonesian cities, especially at this time when Indonesia is planning to relocate its capital city.
