Local church leaders and scholars have long debated the extent to which communication technologies should be adapted to the local church setting and its communication needs. This study explored how church leaders debated and made decisions regarding the use of communication technologies as they adapted to the crisis caused by the COVID-19 pandemic in the United States, including government-mandated bans on meetings in churches as the pandemic emerged. Using a qualitative research approach involving interviews with church leaders and congregants, and informed by media richness, media naturalness theories, and indirect communication, it was found that local church leaders embraced social media platforms on a larger scale to minister remotely. This study contributed to applied and theoretical scholarship by marking a unique time in history when many local church leaders decided to conduct regular worship services almost exclusively through digital media and expand the definition of a local church. Recommendations for future research are suggested for additional cross-sectional studies.
