The problem addressed in this research study is the disconnect between the quality and security of mobile apps during the software development process. There is an increasing presence of mobile apps with security vulnerabilities that allow malicious hackers to obtain access to users' private information. In the rush to bring new apps to market, mobile app developers often sacrifice quality and security testing. The purpose of this study was to determine if quality indicators in mobile apps were related to the level of security. Improved quality and security have implications in both information theory and diffusion of innovation theory. These theories allowed for identifying variables that were useful to examine. A quantitative correlational research design methodology was used in this research to explore the relationship between quality and security in mobile apps. Data was collected from Android open-source apps housed at the public repository Androzoo. Each app was run through static and dynamic analyses to examine three metrics for quality and four for security. A Spearman's rank correlation test was performed to test the twelve hypotheses relating the quality indicators to each security indicator. The quality variables of app complexity and the number of code smells were found to have a statistically significant association with most security indicators. This result was consistent with research in both information theory and diffusion of innovation (DOI) theory. However, the quality variable of the number of violations or potential bugs did not have a statistically significant association with most of the security indicators. This result was consistent with the prior research in this area. This study served as a starting point for incorporating quality and security metrics into mobile app software development processes. Future research could involve extending the work of this study to include mobile apps from other development platforms and identify areas of possible weakness or improvement in current software development trends.
