Thesis (Ph.D.)--New York University, 2022.

This dissertation grapples with reading minority figures in canonical German-speaking literature. This means showing that minority bodies have been and are in fact represented in various texts by each author, despite having been historically ignored in popular scholarly work. Honing in on the works of Rainer Maria Rilke, Walter Benjamin, and Peter Altenberg, I show that these politically vulnerable, German-speaking authors at the dawn of the 20th century, used literature to challenge stereotypical ways of understanding immigration, race, and belonging. These authors, at times rendered stateless and racially marked themselves, exemplify a rethinking of European literature through speculative encounters with the colonial world-challenging the distinction between the margins and what is canon.
