This dissertation positions the literary imagination as a fertile interlocutor to design process and architectural inquiry. Its premise is the architectural project in its full complexity, as it extends beyond the object, to emphasize the active reciprocity between the built environment, its geographical and cultural locality, and its human inhabitation. I take for granted that architecture participates to a multifaceted cultural matrix that includes memories, histories, hopes and ambitions, socially constructed norms and implicit values. These multilayered forces come to bear on the architectural project yet are too elusive and nuanced to be captured through conventional means of architectural design, which predominantly emphasize visual-based approaches to design.I focus on design process to show that literary constructs-such as poetry, fiction, storytelling, and metaphor-are especially agile in rendering subtle yet essential forms of architectural knowledge that elude conventional tools of architectural research and practice. I draw on the very work that instigated this project: the English translation of architecturally trained Jewish-Polish author Bruno Schulz, whose metaphoric constructions are shown to engage language as a medium onto itself. My method follows a hermeneutic model that brings Schulz's prose in a dialogue with questions of concern for architecture: architectural representation, participation to locality, and engagement with world, matter, and making-all of which are specifically focused on the imaginative process of architectural inquiry. I bring to this conversation studies in philosophical hermeneutics, the history and theory of architecture, cultural history, as well as scholarship on Schulz, the mythic imagination, and cross-disciplinary studies, specifically those that focus on architecture and literature. I likewise bring my training in architecture and my experience as a designer, maker, and professor of design.Through an architectural reading of Schulz's prose, this dissertation's contribution is to position literary language as a mode of architectural inquiry that expands the arsenal of the architect's design tactics by engaging, distilling, and building upon forms of architectural knowledge that evade visually-focused design processes such as drawings, sketches, and models: I show that poetic language can operate as a form of process-oriented architectural representation to sustain architectural speculation as a dynamic field of play. I likewise show that literary practices draw on a stratified cultural imaginary and are especially deft at capturing the kind of place-specific knowledge that is implicit and elusive, including multi-sensory, temporal, atmospheric qualities of space. Finally, I argue that in their capacity to keep open self-contradictory or irreconcilable human questions and predicaments, literary constructions do not prematurely foreclose the generative potential of these complexities and can operate as a depository for thoughtful creative action that includes space-making practices. I complement my reading of Schulz with examples from pedagogy to convey that in its extended implications this capacity of the literary imagination allows it to saliently engage questions of human and environmental resilience.
