The purpose of this study was to explore the perceptions of healthcare human resource professionals of transitional leadership traits on recruitment. Over the past decade, a combination of governmental, technological, and health-related constraints has created a unique set of challenges for healthcare organizations. Leadership styles have an influence on the ways leaders will approach challenges and the related decision-making processes associated with how to proceed with solutions. While there is a presence in the research of how transformational leadership traits influence leaders in other areas, there is a lesser exploration of this style in human resource professionals specific to the healthcare industry. A sample of ten healthcare human resource professionals was identified as participants for this study. Each participant answered a series of screening questions to ensure they self-identified with transformational leadership traits, were employed in a healthcare organization, functioned in a human resource role, and possessed a bachelor level or equivalent. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with each of the participants. Open, axial, and selective coding was used to code the data resulting from the interviews. In the analysis of the coded data, two groups emerged a Greater Perceived Understanding (GPU) and a Lesser Perceived Understanding (LPU) group. Within these groups, themes were present in how each group tended to view leadership, recruitment strategy, and person-organization fit. The GPU group was more inclined to respond with concepts aligned with transformational leadership theory, whereas the LPU group tended to respond with concepts that might be aligned with other leadership styles. The GPU group perspectives focused on how transformational leadership traits were shaping changing recruitment strategies and cultural aspects of person-organization fit, given the challenges in healthcare recruiting. The LPU group viewed transactional aspects of leadership in their responses, focusing on recruitment methods and the technical skills of person-organization fit. The findings of this study indicate that there are opportunities to explore how transformational leadership traits are perceived in a cross-section of other human resources functions like training, employee development, and employee relations.
