The path to stardom for an elite athlete is as diverse as the individuals involved and their respective sports. There are several theories focused on the selection, training, and development of a world-class athlete and other theories that aim to discover what it is that the "naturals" with uncanny innate abilities to perform at top-tier levels of competition have that non-elite people do not have (Epstein, 2013). Among the factors hypothesized as contributing to the development of elite baseball players are the person's DNA, rigorous training, physical endowments, perceived availability of parental/caregiver support, perfectionistic tendencies, family culture, and parental/caregiver athletic developmental history. What this study has pointed out about top athletes is that they seem to have several common characteristics that have allowed them to reach high-level physical performance and maximized accomplishments, external factors such as training, practice, and playing the sport impact success. Furthermore, this study has shown that the global pandemic impacted training, mental fortitude, and opportunities to perform and as such, it is critical to understand the experiences of parents raising their top athletes in situations that look very different than pre-COVID times. The untold story in the existing literature is that of elite baseball players' parents and caregivers as they raise their gifted children.
