Transgender and non-binary individuals often face barriers to participation in sports and physical activities in high school and are frequently denied opportunities to participate these activities. Guided by transgender theory, this qualitative multiple case study was guided by research questions to explore transgender and non-binary young adults' perceptions about their experiences playing sports and/or other physical activities in high school. Using purposive and snowball sampling, 10 transgender and 8 non-binary were recruited and interviewed. Participants were recruited through an article posted on Out Sports, and social media postings on Trans Army, Pride Fam, CT TransAdvocacy Coalition, and LGBT News Group, Litchfield Pride, Let Trans Athletes Play, PRIDE Parade, and personal pages. Data were coded and thematically analyzed using NVivo. Responses were transcribed and a synthesized member-check was conducted. Results included that the locker room, unsupportive personnel, derogatory language, exclusion/discrimination, feeling unsafe and uncomfortable, and policy were barriers to high school sports participation for both transgender and non-binary participants. Transgender and non-binary participants indicated that supportive personnel, policy, the locker room, redesign sports, language, education, safety, and comfort facilitated high school sports participation. Non-binary participants also described redesigning high school sports and physical activities, and education as additional facilitators. Recommendations for practice include (a) redesigning locker rooms for more privacy; (b) educating coaches about how to create a safe space for transgender and non-binary athletes; (c) creating policies that are more inclusive of transgender and non-binary individuals and to promote their participation in school-based sport and physical activity; and (d) offering gender neutral sports in schools. Future research should focus on (a) studying transgender and non-binary students who are enrolled in high school; (b) recruiting a larger sample; and (c) exploring how to encourage transgender or non-binary individuals to sign up for school-based sports and physical activities.
