Athletic training education has changed and evolved significantly over the last few decades. Starting in the fall of 2022, the entry-level professional degree for athletic trainers will be a master's degree. Students will be required to attend and successfully complete an accredited master's level professional athletic training education program to be eligible to take the national board exam for athletic trainers to become a certified athletic trainer. This change has been viewed as both positive and negative by current athletic trainers and stakeholders according to published research. However, student perspectives on the perceived advantages and disadvantages or the impact this degree change requirement may have on them have not been thoroughly examined. This interpretive case study included three individual interviews of former students who had anticipated attending graduate school for athletic training but had not yet done so at the time of the study and a focus group of current undergraduate students who were planning to attend graduate school for athletic training. This study aimed to provide an understanding of student experiences and perspectives on this mandated degree change in athletic training education and what they perceived as advantages, disadvantages, benefits, and potential barriers to pursuing a master's degree in athletic training. Through inductive analysis, the major categories found in this study were: advantages of the required master's degree, disadvantages of the required master's degree, barriers students face due to the mandated degree change, student feelings about not attending or delaying their decision to attend graduate school, and suggestions and solutions to overcome challenges and barriers to attending graduate school.
