This project aims to examine factors leading to institutional betrayal in the nonprofit arts sector. Literature and knowledge of institutional betrayal and its detrimental effects on individuals and organizations is expanding, however there is a paucity of literature regarding institutional betrayal in the nonprofit arts sector, which includes museums, art centers, theaters, symphonies, ballet companies, and opera houses. Nonetheless, media reports suggest institutional betrayal does occur within this sector and that there may be cultural norms that enable it to occur. Risk factors for institutional betrayal are identified by reviewing current research, analyzing its effects on victims in other contexts, and comparing these findings to the cultural norms of the nonprofit arts sector. With these risk factors identified, this project recommends how organizations can mitigate these issues.
