The purpose of this quantitative correlational study was to determine if and to what extent competitive levels moderate the associations between athletic identity, sportsmanship, gamesmanship, and instrumental aggression in undergraduate student athletes at a DII university in southwest Texas. Self-concept theory served as the theoretical framework for this work. Participants (N = 91) in the research consisted of NCAA DII and intramural student athletes that responded to demographic questions and completed the Athletic Identity Measurement Scale and the Conduct in Sport Toward Opponent Scale. PROCESS Macro (2018) multiple regression, used for data analysis, showed that competitive levels do not significantly moderate the association between AI and sportsmanship. The results did not reach statistical significance with a b = .03, p = .56. Similar findings emerged for associations between AI and gamesmanship where findings reported as b = -0.07, p = .26. Statistical analysis results for the two failed to reject the null hypothesis. Data analysis was abandoned for instrumental aggression as participant responses produced a floor effect, thus violated requisite test assumptions required for nonparametric equivalent tests. Participants' faith-practices warrant consideration, given the participants in this work, attend a faith-based institution where faith exercises influence student experiences and coaches' recruitment practices, opting for more character-focused recruitment practices versus a singular focus on athletic ability.
