Thesis (M.A.)--State University of New York at Buffalo, 2022.
Includes bibliographical references
The research for this thesis encompasses a critical assessment of five immersive van Gogh exhibitions. It draws comparisons between them and traditional museum experiences. This thesis also questions the sustainability and purpose of the van Gogh exhibitions. It puts into critical perspective the show's commercial and spectacular appeal and weighs its benefits, weaknesses and potential effects on museums. The hypothesis for this research is that while the exhibitions are distinct in terms of their technology, narrative, and marketing strategies, their success stems from each companies' similar theme of spectacularity. This research also hypothesizes that museums may take inspiration from these exhibitions. This thesis investigates the immersive exhibitions' claims of providing a counter-point and revitalizing alternative to a supposedly stale museum experience. It will therefore also assess to what extent such claims correspond with reality and whether particularly the immersive experiences' use of technology to engage audiences might have potential for museum use. This study blends qualitative and quantitative research including museum informatics (Marty & Burton Jones, 2008) and cultural critique. (Benjamin, 2005) (van den Haak, 2018) It incorporates both historical assessments of immersive arts and information about contemporary immersive museum practice. This research has found that museums and other cultural spaces have already incorporated technology within their programming and exhibitions in order to better audience engagement, which differs from the immersive van Gogh exhibitions and their commercialized approach.
