The curriculum and goals of outdoor environmental education programs have largely remained the same since the start of the modern environmental movement in the United States in the 1960s. However, these goals have fallen short in adequately addressing the rapidly shifting environmental conditions in Los Angeles County as well as the culturally diverse ways of understanding and connecting to the environment. Through ethnographic research and methodology, the study at hand aims to determine how outdoor environmental education programs can help connect communities in Los Angeles (LA) to the urban green spaces they find themselves in, and how thusly those green spaces may be utilized to foster beneficial environmental knowledge. My anthropological focus is two-fold. First, my research pays special attention to the inherent knowledge of the land that LA communities currently hold. Second, it explores how outdoor education programs can implement holistic, culturally informed approaches to environmental knowledge in their curriculum in part to help further inform communities in Los Angeles (LA) about how to tackle immediate environmental concerns. This project, informed by larger debates in environmental justice and issues that arise in the area of new ecological anthropology, explores the impact that outdoor education programs can have on our communities. It aims to bridge the gap between communities and their understanding of the land they live on, further preserve local environmental knowledge, foster connections that increase a sense of belonging, and identify ways that environmental leaders can increase environmental literacy, such as disseminating critical environmental concepts and promoting sustainable practices.
